pieces of new york

Allison and I watched the movie Pieces of April this morning.
I had already seen it, prior to my move to New York. What I hadn't realized since then was that the apartment that the NY couple live in -- was on our block. It's interesting how blighted the filmmaker makes our street out to be. To the family, expecting the worst, I can see how it might be. To me, it's a little funny, because we're just off of Houston (pronounced: HOW-stun. Yeah, I know...) in a fairly decent area of the Lower East Side.

... but it's all there... the graffiti, the bodega on the corner -- which seems to be closed during the filming, although i've never seen it closed up, the machine shop that is usually closed... yup.
It's all there.

I wonder how my parents will "see" our street?

* A Clear Channel show. Explicitly listed on the ticket, which gives me giggles.
** One way or another -- Vividly remember not actually paying to see these shows. NOTE: I did pay for entry into both a Laser Light Show and the Nutcracker Ballet, so I'm not pawning the aforementioned as the "lame shows I'd never pay to see."
*** This ticket is a nicely printed ticket, obviously done by either the vendor or promoter. It's a shame there aren't more of these.

General Notes:

All but two, the Sloan and Jesus Lizard ticket are Ticketmaster stubs.
Wasted cash on service charges comes out to aprox. $87.05 -- probably more as some of the stubs are in pretty ragged shape and are missing the cost information.

Interestingly enough, and I think that this has been pointed out on some ticket stub memory website, that I can remember quite a lot about these shows by seeing the stub, knowing the date, etc.
Otherwise, I've been to countless other shows and for the most part. I can't tell you a damn thing about them. I know I've seen the Archers of Loaf more than once, but I don't have any physical reminder of them - stains, shrinkage, and holes have eliminated any t-shirts left from that era. On the other hand, I don't have a ticket stub to the Low/Dirty Three show that I went to at the 7th House in Pontiac and I can remember that show more than any other show I've ever been to.**** (Although I couldn't tell you the month, day, or year. I can remember is that I was wearing a sweater.)

**** Another story for another day. It'll be my next post, I promise.

i need you so much closer...

so, this distance is a problem.
it's not that i'm not able to deal with it,
but i certainly don't like it.

if i had this all to do again,
i would have gone with her straightaway...
but of course nyc (read: life) is not easy like that.

it may never be easy.
(life either for that matter...)
that is troublesome in and of itself.
but i'm not down on the idea of being there.
i'm just down on the situation at hand.

it's funny how when we first met i was annoyed by the fact that she would call me on the phone and talk my ear off about nothing.
now i'm annoyed that we can't even make small talk and the 'big stuff' seems akward and impossible for phone conversation.
there's no blame.
there's just a void that i want very badly to fill,
and there's really only one way to fill it.
i'd be lying if i said i didn't ache.
but i'm afraid to say it, or show it.
in fear, i guess.
of what?
who knows?

If I can make it there...

So, many of you are already aware, but my wife has left me…
… to start her job in New York that is! (Maybe I caught some of you off guard there, but most likely not... but... if so, GOTCHA!)

Anyway, I’m trying my best to keep my sanity, stave off loneliness, and wrap things up around these parts.
So, if you’re up to no good and need a partner in crime, let me know. I’m available for small time, petty crimes.

Otherwise, I’ve got an interesting balance of nervousness and excitement in my belly.
I’m excited because of the fact that… well, it’s NEW YORK CITY.
It feels like there are going so many more opportunities available to me, just awaiting my arrival to the big city.
There’s a lot more going on, things to do, things to see, new people to meet, etc.

And then there’s money.
That’s really my only concern. I’m really nervous about how much things like rent are going to cost
vs. the amount of money that, at least initially, will be coming in.
I’ve got some employment opportunities, but nothing nailed down yet.
I’m not too worried about a job, because I’m really willing to do whatever…
but likewise, it always seems like you’re not really able to land a job until you’re there.
On the other hand there’s always our savings if things are a little rough to start out…we’ve got a sizable savings going on, but I don’t want to deplete it just to survive.

I guess Allison and I can finally be the poor newlyweds that we’re supposed to be. Our new lifestyle will revolve around what is FREE – the free concerts, art showings/installations, the free museums, etc.

This past year was a memorable one indeed.

After several months of on-again/off-again
belly-achin' about my job at the Michigan News
Agency, through the help of one Mr. Brian Mansberger, I procured myself at Bronson Methodist Hospital.

Just a few days after my 29th birthday, I started into the world of Information Technology.
A 'real' job so to speak, chock full of bueauracry that would drive me just as nuts as the MNA
had in the past. However, I was more than happy to get away from the certifable nutjobs that
had their daily visits into my world, as well as my very wonderful, but very neurotic and
'nut-jobby in her own special and endearing way' boss.

The other major milestone for me this year would be my marriage to my wonderful girl of almost
five years, Allison K. Spicer. Touted by many as "the best wedding I've ever been to!"
I don't think I could have imagined a more perfect day. Beautiful weather, a sweet ride -- thanks to an awesome father-in-law, an awesome turnout, an awesome 'minister' -- who spent the reception with beer in one hand, cigarette in the other; great and personally meaningful vows sans any mention of one g-o-d, a crying wife, wonderfully perfect toasts by our wonderful maids and men, a crying groom, three wonderful non-weddning type DJs (Ivo, Ed, and Matt,) wonderful food and drink, and plenty of ass-shakin'. A special thanks to Ms. Colleen Wolpert for her photographic work, forever capturing our special day.

Other memorable moments:

The closing of the Space.

A post-wedding trip to the 'Near South' including stops in Indianapolis, Bloomington, Louisville,
Bowling Green, Nashville, Cincinatti, Colombus, Cleveland. The Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame,
my new favorite jeans, great eats in Nashville, learning that value-priced motels aren't necessarily worth saving $20, the taking full advantage of the value in Thrifty Rent-A-Car's unlimited milage rate.

1977 Mopeds grand opening, well spent money for services at 1977 Mopeds. Kalamazoo will remain Moped City USA due to Dan's excellent work and perserverence.
K-Zoo is lucky to have you, Dan.

Trading the mini-van for a moped.

Moving into the Keenway Apartment complex. Having to endure 'White-trash-ville' to save on rent.
Worth it? Maybe. Annoying? Yes. Entertaining? Hells yeah! Across the hall neighbors getting
evicted? Priceless.

New friendships with John Tod. I can't believe I've reinstated your love of music, (wish others would recognize that I am a force to be reckoned with when it comes to the cool tunes,) and you reinstating my facination with WH40K, computer gaming, etc. Who'da thought?
You will be in my thoughts this year no matter where I end up.
I hope that whatever happens you will remain strong and true to yourself.

Kelly, Beans, and Mr. James, you rock as well.

I got caught up in the Friendster/MySpace phenom - filled out countless surveys, and heard from some people I was surprised to hear from.

A couple of trips to Chi-town with my brother. Who could ask for a better sibling. We both like to record shop, we both love Chicago. WEEKEND records, the VENUS party w/ Adult. and
hott DJs/hotter dancing! And hosts!!, who can leave out the fact that Ivo, Andrea, Peanut, and
Pierson, are great hosts! The Dudes rank up there, along with Miss Tomlin, Tim the Red, and the Human Torch - Miles Raymer.
BTW note to Miss Annie -- my brother apologizes profusely for you having to endure the fajita meat at dinner... he was so embarrassed after I told him that you don't eat meat!

Show Highlights:

Q and Not U/French Toast @ Kraftbrau. Hell. It was an awesome show.
Watching J. Franta and J. Upson spazz out to the sounds of the Q, a rousing politic-jam, talking hockey and b-ball with John Davis and connecting with Harris and Chris a little more, paying both bands well beyond what I owed them... and making some money ta boot! Can't beat that.

The Constantines/Don Cabellero @ Kraftbrau. My most emo moment ever!
After a rousing performance by the Constantines, and being recognized by Bri, I HUGGED the guy... sweaty shirt and all. I was just so WOWED!! I grabbed the guy and hugged him hard.
Don Cab was a joke. My memory of them marred forever by a bunch of stand-in's half-assed performance interrupted by some guy threatening to kill Damon Che. Sound like Don Cab antics/happenings? You bet.

Taking Pictures/Lungfish @ the Empty Bottle, CHICAGO - An evening excursion to the Empty Bottle with J. Franta(stic) included a rousing performance by Taking Pictures (surpassing the lackluster performance on their album... no wonder they want to have it issued on vinyl, a little remastering perhaps?) ...seeing Shannin and Cale - former co-workers at Southern Records, an amazing performance by Lungfish, just the right amount of beer-drinking, culminating with near-death on the drive back to Kalamazoo.

As this was long winded... stay tuned... tomorrow will give predictions/resolutions for 2004.
